Music has the power to change the world. The Voice Project?the product of a collaboration between Hunter Heaney, musician Chris Holmes, and Anna Gabriel (Peter Gabriel?s daughter)?is rooted in the concept of using music as a means to achieving peace in war-torn Northern Uganda, Southern Sudan, and Eastern Congo.
The violent LRA militia in these countries gains strength in numbers by abducting children and forcing them to fight. The women of these African nations have united, and are using music to reach soldiers too afraid desert the militia. Their lyrics, transmitted via radio and song, are working: for the first time in 25 years of war, LRA soldiers are heading home. The Voice Project aims to promote and amplify these women?s vital messages.
On Tuesday night at SPiN NY, The Voice Project hosted the Amplify Peace benefit to raise awareness and funds for the non-profit?s awe-inspiring ventures. New York?s most globally conscious, giving individuals turned out to support the cause. Acoustic music, a live auction, and some fierce ping-pong showdowns were just a few of the evening diversions at SPiN. From comedian Aziz Ansari to model Alise Shoemaker, the crowd in attendance did their part to amplify the Voice Project?s aims.
