Craving an insider’s look into Istanbul’s renowned cultural scene? Look no further than ISTANBUL ’74, an initiative founded in 2009 with the aim of highlighting Istanbul’s many artistic offerings and enhancing its place as a cultural center. Spearheaded by husband-and-wife team Demet Müftüoglu-Eseli and Alphan Eseli, who’s backgrounds in art direction, film production and fashion help them expertly curate a variety of exhibitions in Turkey and around the globe.
While never adhering to a single aesthetic, ISTANBUL ’74’s many events range in style from playful to conceptual. In addition to monthly events, Istanbul ’74 is a force behind the Istanbul International Arts & Culture Festival known as Istancool, an annual free-of-charge festival that encourages the public to explore what’s new with the city’s cultural class. A-listers such as Kirsten Dunst, Courtney Love, Tilda Swinton and Carine Roitfeld have attended this three day whirlwind of screenings, workshops and exhibitions.
