Our latest offering is Turkish boutique Atelier 55. This beloved Istanbul shop beautifully masters the high-low mix by stocking locally sourced wares alongside luxe designer goods (think towering Vivienne Westwood boots, fur-trimmed Halston sandals, and kitten-embroidered Charlotte Olympia flats). Touted by The Guardian as an ?unmissable? shopping destination, Atelier 55?s selection extends beyond clothing and accessories?it also offers contemporary-chic home goods and textiles. Below, shopkeeper/globetrotter Ba?ak Abaci dishes about her most-loved Atelier 55 pieces and tips us off about a few Istanbul hotspots.
1) What is Atelier 55?
Atelier 55 is a platform for all kinds of design. We stock everything from clothing to paintings?we not only purchase goods to sell in our boutique, but also create them ourselves.
2) What is your inspiration behind the collections that are curated in Atelier 55?
We always try to choose pieces that are different from what we see in other boutiques. Handcrafted pieces are our favorite, as you can see all of the hard work that the artisan invested in it. When we search for home textiles, we never put anything in the boutique if we wouldn?t buy it for our own homes.
3) What is your favorite Atelier 55 piece? Why?
We?re lusting after Vivienne Westwood?s Pirate Boots, as we think they?re a classic fashion piece that every woman has to have. We also love R&Y Augousti clutches and David Koma dresses?their downtown-sleek aesthetic make them behave more like modern art pieces rather than mere accessories.
4) What are your favorite ?secrets? in Istanbul?
Our boutique is based in Galata?there is always so much to do and discover in the area. Cukurcuma is another one of our favorite locales, as it?s a hotspot for small antique furniture shops.
