More recently, she hosted India?s 2012 GQ Men of the Year Awards and the Light of India Awards in New York. Manuel currently splits her time between New York and Mumbai, culling her much-admired style from the unique vibes of both cities. Below, Manuel gives us a peek into her covetable wardrobe and shares her top picks from the L-atitude site.
1) How did you get your start as a model/VJ?
I started my career at an Elite Look of the Year modeling contest; though I didn?t win, I was spotted by a choreographer who booked me for another show. From then on, I continued to get work as a runway model. As for VJing, I initially worked as a VJ on a music channel called Channel V, but quit after two years because I wanted to focus on modeling. I went back to TV after a few years when the heads of ZEE Entertainment asked me if I would like to host my own shows on Channel V. I worked with them for four years and produced three of my own shows: After Hours, Nina at 9, and Midnight Manuel. I am one of the very few VJs in India to have shows named after them.
2)How would you describe your style?
My style is all about coolness and confidence; it continues to change, which I think is very important. I love color and I like to mix and match. I love structured jackets, wide leg pants, and my sparkly shoes. I follow trends, but not blindly. I definitely know what suits my body and what doesn?t?I hate A-line dresses!
3) Did your exposure to top designers shape your sense of style?
I acquired my sense of style by traveling all over the world, admiring fashionable women I spotted on the street, and browsing through fashion magazines. My exposure to top designers as a model definitely made me more conscious of the way I dress.
4) What are your favorite boutiques in India and New York?
In New York, some of my favorites are Opening Ceremony, What Goes Around Comes Around, and All Saints. In India, I always shop at Bungalow 8, Bombay Electric, Atosa, and Sabyasachi Mukherjee. However, the majority of my shopping in India is done by contacting designers directly, as most of them are my friends. I also love wearing pieces by Little Shilpa and Suhani Pittie, who are jewelry designers. A few of my favorite clothing designers are Savio Jon, Gaurav Gupta and Kallol Datta.
5) What?s on your must-buy list for the holiday season?
That?s a very dangerous question! If you must know, I?m currently lusting after a diamond-encrusted Chopard watch that I wore when I was hosting the GQ Men of the Year Awards earlier this year.
6)Name your three most-loved pieces from the L-atitude Web site.
