House of Lavande was best known for its covetable collection of 20th century vintage jewelry that was until owner and jewelry collector Tracy Smith launched her own collection of sartorial baubles under the same label. Taking inspiration from the thousands of pieces she has collected over the decades, Tracy spun the most appealing vintage trends into modern masterpieces. All the vintage jewelry that I am surrounded by gives me seemingly endless inspiration to be able to express my own artistic vision.
What is unique about your process of production? How do you come up with the designs for your jewelry?
It always starts with my archive of vintage pieces. I try to pull one or two pieces that I feel particularly drawn to at that moment- then decide if it's the color, texture or overall design that I'm drawn towards and embrace the one particular element that I especially like. From there I develop the mood further with images of ANYTHING- color, travel destinations, photographs, animals, etc. to create an inspiration board. Then I look for the thread of commonality and start with the first group of the collection. This is my favorite part of the process.
There is such a strong travel narrative within your collection- what are some of your favorite destinations?
My favorite family destinations are my own home in Palm Beach and our other home in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. However, there are so many places I have yet to travel that I couldn't possibly name a favorite destination yet. . . .I still want to go to Japan, India, New Zealand, Morocco, Spain. . just to name a few.
What is your favorite House of Lavande piece?
The double shark's tooth necklace. It's so easy to throw on with anything.
Who is your Muse? Describe the House of Lavande Girl?
Jessica Alba. She wears the vintage and new collection with such a great ease & sense of style. She is always put together, but makes it look effortless and fun.
