Everyone knows Brooklyn is now considered the slightly hipper version of Manhattan and it is exactly in this borough where we found the coolest new jewelry brand ILD. This worldly brand designed by artist and designer Iwona Ludyga is inspired by travel and culture, we think the decidedly urbane and exotic vibe is perfect to wear layered for everyday. We especially love the horsehair tassel choker layered with several multiple strands of carved bone bead necklaces. Everything is made by hand in the designers studio, although many of these pieces often look like heirloom talismans from a native American or African tribe, this upscale DIY collection is deeply rooted in the new hipster vibe spreading over the Brooklyn bridge.
Describe your brand
ILD is a Brooklyn based company. We hand make artisan jewelry from variety of materials, from solid gold through glass beads, shells, silk, leather to rubber.
How did you start your brand?
For as long as I can remember I was always busy making something. I taught myself how to sew and my mom showed me how to knit. I started making jewelry when I came to New York and then started attending metal smith classes. Just wearing the jewelry out, I quickly built up a clientele and with it my collection. I started selling at designers markets and in 2006 I participated in my first trade show. That took my company to the next level and really launched the brand.
What are some of your endless inspirations?
Almost anything can be inspiring. Sometimes it is a color, a stone, a shape or a story. Sometimes it is a creative energy of another artist. I've always been surrounded by amazing creators - musicians, painters, and craftsmen. Their drive was contagious and made me want to be equally productive. I admired their skill and strived to be better at what I do.
How does travel inspire your collection?
Traveling is like taking a breath of fresh air. Almost right away I feel rejuvenated, inspired and ready to work on a new idea. I also find myself inspired by places I have never been to, maybe they are my future travels, I hope. Reading about distant countries and cultures always gets my imagination going.
Your collection has grown so much in such a short time, what creative endeavors are on the horizon?
Jewelry is my passion but I would love to express my creativity in other forms as well. I still knit and would like to build that part of my business. I love making home decor pieces. Since I'm growing out of my studio space I am considering opening a store where I would carry my designs, work of my favorite fellow artists, as well as treasures I find in my travels.
