Never again reach for an oversized boyfriend shirt as a beach cover-up when you’ve got a Denizina piece in your wardrobe. These handmade and hand-embroidered kimonos feature vibrant batik prints in colors ranging from pastel blue to ruby red. Made in Thailand, the boho-chic label’s designs work just as well over a bikini on the beach as with ripped jeans in the city.
Shop Latitude speaks with Deniz Alkan, founder of the bohemian label, to learn more about what inspires her design process.
Q: How would you sum up the ethos of your brand?
A: We create handmade, limited edition, unique pieces for modern-day bohemian women who are in touch with their true selves and in harmony with life. My designs are my way of thanking women for nurturing, for loving, for making this planet a beautiful place.
Q: What led you to launch the label?
A: When I moved to Thailand, I just fell in love with the state of ‘being’ in this country. No rush, no worries, no hurries… just perfectly enjoying being. I also immersed myself in spirituality, learning about the process of one’s self-creation, and realized how important it is to honor women for creating life. I wanted to create something special, unique and personal for my peers that would bring out the uniqueness in each of them.
Q: What’s your biggest source of inspiration?
A: My main inspiration is nature—flowers, patterns, textures and the golden ratio. I love the bold colors, the diversity, and the sheer beauty of nature.
Q: How does travel inspire your collections?
A: Travel is the most eye-opening experience one can have. Every new place you visit will surprise you, will open your eyes to another dimension that you never knew existed. When I travel, I like to see and feel the authentic textures and textiles of the place, and am so inspired by the ethnic clothing of the locals.
Q: What’s next for your label?
A: I plan to venture into resortwear. And in the long run I would like to cooperate with foundations directly working for women’s rights. I’d love to do something significant for women, reaching out to those who may not be as lucky as some of us are, and who are not being given the same chances.
Q: How would you describe your personal style and what inspires it?
A: My style is boho-chic. I am inspired by the flowerchildren of the ’70s, spreading peace and love. I am a true romantic. Flowers, soft fabrics, romance, daydreaming and enjoying life are my inspirations.
Q: Which city do you have an endless love affair with?
A: I would pick three: Istanbul, Rome and New York.
Q: What is your most desired passport stamp?
A: Nepal.
Q: A hotel you wouldn’t mind staying in forever?
A: Gili Lankanfushi in the Maldives.
Q: Most beloved souvenir?
A: Handpainted wall art from Sri Lanka.
Q: Favorite way to shop: department store, market or souk?
A: Souk! There’s so much to discover.
