Just Don't Call it Panama

July 10, 2015

There are many types of Panama hats, but they all have one thing in common: they?re made in Ecuador. According to legend, it was the Americans who coined the term ?Panama? after the press ran photographs of Theodore Roosevelt wearing a hat as he inspecting the Panama Canal- actually he had just borrowed the hat from the Ecuadorian president moments before the photographers arrived. In spite of this big misnomer,...

Laura Bailey Explores Soho House, Istanbul

July 09, 2015

Last time ( the first time) I flew to Istanbul, sleeping in Europe and spying on Asia across the Bosphorus, it was with intrepid curiosity and two hyperactive kids in tow. Last time ( the first time) I flew to Istanbul, sleeping in Europe and spying on Asia across the Bosphorus, it was with intrepid curiosity and two hyperactive kids in tow. From the pirate treasure of Topkapi Palace to the underground labyrinth Cisterns, we played hide-and seek amidst ancient architectural wonders. In May I returned, for an indulgent sleepover weekend, SoHo House Style; a lovingly restored frescoed palazzo in the arty PERA district the latest (and grandest) addition to Nick Jones? club/ hotel empire.

So seductive was the combination of rooftop cocktails, Cowshed spa and a gaggle of old friends beautifying every velvet alcove, it?s a miracle we even made it to the souk. But Istanbul tourism without a map, or a cultural checklist, proved a different kind of joy. Just drifting, pomegranate juice in hand, stumbling upon vintage stores, playgrounds and steamy bakeries; on to a traditional hammam where the shy surrender to violent soapy scrubbing on a slab of mosaic marble ? more like a dare than a treat. The therapeutic (masochistic) antidote to late-night dancing. Istanbul ? where all worlds collide in a soulful clash of historic pilgrimage and modern magpie wanderlust.

Shop The Marrakech Souk

July 09, 2015

The oceanic and storied souk, a true maze of a marketplace, is a shopaholic?s dream. Within it, tiny open-fronted stores sell spices and lanterns, pottery and leather bags, sequined slippers and rose water. It?s worth visiting simply for the atmosphere and its almost Biblical setting. If you see something you like, haggle ruthlessly (with a smile), always starting at a quarter of the suggested price.

It?s worth visiting simply for the atmosphere and its almost Biblical setting. If you see something you like, haggle ruthlessly (with a smile), always starting at a quarter of the suggested price. First-time visitors, even fifth-time ones, will appreciate the aid of a good guide. When you?ve had enough of the souks and the hassle, and want something of slightly better quality, I suggest the boutiques in Gueliz such as Studio Lalla; the ones by the Majorelle Gardens such as 33 Rue Majorelle and Mustapha Blaoui.

A favorite spot in the medina is Souk Cherifa where a number of new boutiques have opened in the second story courtyard space just below Terrasse des Epices. Look for Baboucheshop, Sissi Morocco, Lalla and Zaaz.
