New York-based designers Yuvi Alpert and Danna Kobo are the boho-chic creators behind the Shashi label. Best known for their simple personal jewelry inspired by the cultures of India, Nepal, Morocco, and Africa, Shashi has been spotted on some impressive wrists including those of first lady Michelle Obama and model Alessandra Ambrosio. We caught up with Alpert and Kobo and asked them to share some details about their far-flung travels and next Shashi endeavors.
How does travel inspire the Shashi collection?
Shashi celebrates the culture and tradition from countries around the world with an affordable luxury collection of global inspired jewelry. Styles are made modern for everyday wear infusing current fashion trends for today's fashionista.
How is Shashi inspired by India, Morocco, Nepal, and Africa?
Colors, beads, and textures from India, Morocco, Nepal and Africa are ever inspiring. India for jewel tones of ruby, emerald and sapphire; Moroccan and African jewelry for mixed materials of metals and colors; Nepal for its special beads -- each one is so beautifully intricate.
What is so special about the Rakhi?
It represents the love between a brother and a sister, a holy thread tied around the wrist. The thread pulsates with love and protection, signifying the bond between brothers and sisters strengthening the family ties to its core. Rahkis are so special, simple, and meaningful for everyday wear - and greatly inspire many of Shashi bracelets.
Which city does Shashi identify with most?
Shashi's first collection was inspired by India and the importance jewelry has in the culture and traditions. As the collection evolves and grows, Shashi finds artistry from around the world including America's Southwest, Paris, Turkey, Greece, amongst many others.
