Weekend at the Oasis
When our friends at ASMALLWORLD asked us to be part of their weekend re-launch trip to Marrakesh, Morocco, we jumped at the chance. After arriving a week earlier to scour our favorite shopping haunts, Alisa, Ashley, and I joined Sabine Heller and all of her guests on the balcony of the Taj Palace Hotel Presidential Suite.
When our friends at ASMALLWORLD asked us to be part of their weekend re-launch trip to Marrakesh, Morocco, we jumped at the chance. After arriving a week earlier to scour our favorite shopping haunts, Alisa, Ashley, and I joined Sabine Heller and all of her guests on the balcony of the Taj Palace Hotel Presidential Suite. (Anyone who sat through Sex and the City 2 will be familiar with this suite, it was where the girls stayed when they were supposedly in the Middle East.) After catching up with a crowd that included some of our favorite globetrotters: Chelsea Leyland, Lily Kwong, Poppy Delavigne, and Waris Ahluwalia, we were off to dinner at La Salama.
The next morning we played host for a shopping excursion to the Medina. We convinced our friend Mohamed Elmaarouf, founder of Imports from Marrakesh, to play tour guide. Having grown up in the Medina, he was literally treated like a rock star wherever we went. Our shopping gang included Mammie Gummer, Dianna Argon, Zoe Kazan, Theophilis London, Natasha Leon, Serrina Merrimen Alvarado, Jessica Joffe, a bunch of other friends and our favorite magazine editors -- all of whom were sworn to secrecy when it came to revealing our most treasured spots in the souk! After stewarding Harley Viera Newton to buy leopard calf skin baboush slippers and Mammie to buy rugs, it was time to get ready for the Saturday night?s lavish party at the Beldi Country Club.
Back at the Beldi we slipped into our favorite caftans and joined Olivia Wilde, Allison Mosshart, Marianne Faithful, Josephine De La Baume, and Thomas Bangalter of Daft Punk, plus other A-list guests, in a tented outdoor dining room on the hotel's spectacular grounds. We are talking a landscape that resembled the gardens at Giverny with an Asian twist! Much eating, drinking, dancing, snake charming, and of course shop talk, made for a perfect evening under the stars.
