There are parties, and then there are evenings that ever so chicly represent milestones in the cultural zeitgeist. You may be able to guess what some of these are -- two that always spring to mind are Truman Capote?s 1966 black and white ball held at the Plaza Hotel, and the 1977 birthday soiree for Bianca Jagger held at Studio 54. The birthday girl actually rode into the west 54th nightclub on a white horse! Making either of these guest lists would rank as a lifetime achievement.
Legendary Studio 54 club owner and host Steve Rubell always said, ?to have a great party, invite only guests more interesting than you.? The most recent celebrity-packed event we wish we had been invited to was Sean Parker's redwood forest nuptials. It was the most lavish bohemian scene played out over acres of lush redwood forestland. An event this decadent is only possible when exceptionally good taste mixes with a bankroll of several million dollars.
Luckily, there are great seasonal parties that do not require an invite or a million dollar backdrop. Some of our favorites are the annual Full Moon Party in Thailand and the spring celebration of Holi in India, where everyone -- regardless of social status -- celebrates the triumph of good over evil by dancing in the street and dosing each other with colored pigment. These events are more about being there than making the list. Merely show up, get into the vibe, celebrate with gusto, and make that day or night one of the most magical to remember.
